I played a game of equation tic tac toe a couple of weeks ago with my seventh grade math students. They'd been struggling to solve one step equations with confidence so I wanted something that would give them practice but would also be fun. Some of these bunches can get a little rowdy so its good for me to include some completion with them. It turned out really well and the kids channeled their energy long enough to play it.
The game was a great form of formative assessment because I could walk around and "commentate" each match like I was an ESPN broadcaster. While doing this I can get a sense of how students are doing with the equations, both by simply looking at the board and seeing who has pieces on the board, along with talking to students and walking through equations with them.
